Welcome to Performing Arts. We are a thriving and successful faculty teaching Drama and Music throughout the school. Our team comprises of a Head of Faculty/Head of Drama, Head of Music, two further Music teachers and three further Drama teachers.
The numbers of students choosing to take Drama and Music at GCSE and A Level have grown this year, reflecting not only our success with excellent grades, but also the quality of the wider experience that students encounter in our extra-curricular programme. Our students are highly successful and often go on to study Drama or Music at university, or audition for Drama schools and Music colleges. Once again this year, following an established pattern, key members of the senior team are studying Drama or Music and, in the case of the Head Girl, both, signalling the calibre of students that we attract. With past students having been accepted to study at Oxford, we can put paid to rumours of these subjects being ‘soft options’.
We are a faculty who are as busy with our extra-curricular activities as we are in our lessons, with activities taking place every evening. These range from Jazz Band to Samba, from Drama clubs to school production rehearsals and the spaces are always busy with students rehearsing coursework. Trips to the theatre and music concerts are a regular feature, whether this be a major West End show or a touring production at 21 South Street in Reading. The Music Department has run successful tours abroad, including to Holland most recently, and the Drama Department has an outstanding track record of students achieving places in the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, beating off thousands of other hopefuls. In addition to the annual school production, there are three Music concerts each year and both Drama and Music have established links with local primary schools, giving both our pupils and theirs, excellent performance and sharing opportunities. Further opportunities to learn and play instruments are provided through our extensive range of Peripatetic teachers.
The aim for the faculty over the next few years is to maintain the high standards already achieved and to continue to provide a fulsome enrichment programme.
